Music at Ashurst

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupil’s progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

The interrelated dimensions of music

The Interrelated Dimensions of Music is a way of referring to the building blocks of music, as referred to in the National Curriculum for Music in England. The spiral structure of the curriculum enables children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about musical concepts through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills. 

What do our children say about music in the Spring Term?

Reception

I like dancing to music and singing.

Year 1

I like when we sing in assembly every other Thursday.

Year 2

 I’ve really liked being able to use the glockenspiels and learning how to play 'I am The Music Man!'.

I really enjoyed learning more about the glockenspiel and how the notes change pitch.

Year 3

I really like learning about the beat to songs and learning different styles!

I like learning about different styles of music. My favourite is pop because it means popular.

Year 4

I like it when we learn about all of the different styles of music. I particularly like country music! I love that music has the ability to calm me down.

My favourite type of music is pop because the beat and tempo are always really fast and exciting.

Year 5

I've loved using our new floorbooks. It really pushes us to use new vocabulary to get into the class music floor book!

I've enjoyed learning about what major and minor mean and sound like.

Year 6

I've enjoyed learning new vocabulary to make sure that we use it in our answers. 

I've enjoyed learning about what composition means and using rhythm grids to create our own piece of music.
